Establishing Social Roots in South Florida
Moving right along, we return to the mundane daily proceedings of my life.
Recently, I’ve been going to events sponsored by Venture Out, a LGBT group here in South Florida that meets for various social events, dinner, art shows, concerts, sporting events, and more. A few weeks back they went to the Sun Fest in West Palm Beach. Two weeks ago they went to the sidewalk art show in Hollywood, Florida. Most of the people in the group are much younger than I am; thirties and forties dominate with some “twenty and fifty somethings” thrown in. There are many couples, some who have been together ten years or more. I have some trouble keeping up with them, especially if the event involves a tremendous amount of walking in crowded environments, but I manage with a bit of help occasionally. I think I’m viewed as something of an octogenarian wonder by many of the repeat members who seem to enjoy talking with me. I’ve exchanged address and telephone numbers with some, and plan to act on these socially. I think cocktail, wine and cheese tasting parties as opposed to dinners will be easiest for me to handle. I’m hoping to find some temp. Service that will supply a maid or server type person to help with the preparation, serving, and clean up, though I worry about the cost of such a thing. We’ll see. I’ll let you know how this endeavor progresses, dear journal.
The weather here has finally been cloudy and wet (Hurray!) because of Alberto, but last week I was on the beach taking photographs as usual. I have thousands in my computer now. I especially liked this one because the dad and son seem to be looking at something they’ve picked up at water’s edge. I’m glad I was able to be a father. So many gay men never have the chance because our culture convinces them they can’t have a long term loving relationship with another man, and also makes marriage and family illegal for them in many states.
