The Constitution Amendment to Disenfranchise an Entire Class of Citizens

Once again, I find it necessary to interrupt reporting the daily events of my life with the limited personal effort I am able to exert to demonstrate how this president and the Republican Party are cynically manipulating the people of our country.

The evangelical Christian estimate for the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered citizens in the United States is a conservative 6 to 7 million people. Alfred C. Kinsey made a much higher estimate for homosexual men alone as a group in his study of human sexuality (1947-48). * He demonstrated through extensive research that as much as 10% of the male population in the United States was gay, and / or had gay tendencies. That percentage if extended to the current population of the United States translates to as many as 16 million adult homosexual American males. That estimate does not take into consideration lesbians, bisexual and trangendered persons. Suffice it to say that there are somewhere between 7 and 25 million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered Americans today. And, if truth were told instead of evangelical Christian “truthiness,” the actual number of LGBT people is closer to the 25 million estimate. The proposed amendment to limit marriage to a man and a woman is specifically designed to consign those millions of people to second-class citizenship. The new regulated class system would prescribe by law the rights and privileges of LGBT people as opposed to all other Americans because it would preserve the inequities that currently exist as a future and permanent part of the Constitution of the United States.

What are those inequities: 1) only married partners, or immediate family members may be present at a sick family member’s bedside in hospital if that person is unable to say otherwise, 2) only married partners may pass on their estate to one another without any Federal tax up to the Federal limit, 3) only married partners may pass their estate on to biological or adopted children without a 50% to 100% Federal tax penalty being levied against the children depending on which one of the child’s parents has died, 4) Only married partners may make legal and/or medical arrangements for an incapacitated partner without having made elaborate legal provision in advance, 5) many states have laws that already prevent LGBT people from adopting one another’s biological offspring - the amendment to the United States constitution would make it impossible for those draconian prejudicial laws to be changed, and 5) In states where it is illegal for LGBT people to adopt children, partners will not be able to adopt one another’s biological children in order to protect them from the death of a parent. In short, LGBT families will have none of the rights and protections that heterosexual families take for granted.

The constitution is the miraculous instrument the forefathers created to protect us from individuals or groups of people with a false brand of truth, be it political, social, or religious that will limit the freedoms enjoyed by the citizens of the United States of America. The constitution is simply the guarantor of every citizen's “happiness.” Instead, this constitutional amendment is designed to limit the “happiness” of one group of people in order to satisfy the religious “truthiness” of an evangelical Christian minority. And yet, most amazingly George W. "Bush's brain," Carl Rove, and the Republican Party are using the "marriage amendment" and our constitution in an attempt to distract the attention of the American people from the real problems at hand: 1) the Iraq war (the wrong war against terrorism), 2) the failure of the Federal Government to help the people of New Orleans during and after Katrina, 3) our failing health care system, 4) the depletion of social security funds, 5) The soaring national debt, 6) illegal immigration 7) our dependence on foreign oil, and 8) our failing inner city educational system.. *2

Write to your senator to state your opposition to the AMENDMENT to limit the freedom of an entire class of people. Go to Free Speech Coalition Inc. to find out how.

Sorry, Mike. I bollixed your comment. However, I do not wish to be logical in my writing here. I am an angry old man, and it was ageist to say that my anger is out of character for an older person. Whether you wish to admit it or not, the amendment as proposed would limit the happiness of an entire class of people, as it would prevent them from obtaining the same rights and privileges as their heterosexual brothers and sisters.
